Going to the Christmas market, decorating the Christmas tree, making gingerbread houses are traditions believed to originate from Germany.
Many activities and customs of the Christmas season in Germany have been introduced and spread to many countries around the world.
Mannequin of chestnut clamp
The origin of the mannequin comes from a German folktale. Legend says that a wealthy farmer had tried many methods but could not break the chestnut shell. He offered a reward for whoever thought of how to do it. Many people from carpenters to soldiers took the exam. In the end, however, only a mannequin maker found a solution in form of a doll with a large jaw, which could break the shell. These dolls were later known as chestnut clamps.
Christmas tree
The custom of decorating the Christmas tree, also known as Tannenbaum, originated in the 16th century. Although Estonia and Latvia have similar tree decoration customs, Germany is considered the first country to use Christmas trees.
